A square tower was an integral component of every feudal castle. In addition to their defence purposes, square towers also had a symbolic one designating ownership and dominion over the surrounding area. According to the documents, the tower was called Torre dell’orologio after the clock that was installed on its top floor. The tower had various purposes such as surveillance, pigeon breeding, but it also had a prison located in the basement. The fireplace located on this floor tells us that they tried to make the guard work somewhat more bearable during the cold winter days and nights.
